How to capture beautiful photos of your baby: top tips from a family photographer

Guest blog by Danielle, owner of Bee Focused Photography

Hi, I’m Danielle, a mum of two cheeky boys and the proud owner of Bee Focused Photography, where I specialise in capturing life's most precious moments. As a fellow parent, I understand the chaos and joy that come with raising little ones, and I know just how quickly time flies.

When my first son was born, I didn’t take the opportunity to have professional photos done. It's one of those regrets that sneaks up on you, especially when you realise just how quickly babies turn into toddlers and beyond! By the time my second was born, my love for photography had blossomed, and although I wasn’t a pro yet, I started documenting our family’s journey. Now, I’m lucky enough to capture the fleeting moments not just for my own family, but for many others too.

In the era of smartphones and Instagram filters, you might wonder: why should you invest in professional photography? The simple answer is that it’s about creating lasting memories—not just snapshots. While your phone can capture a moment, my job is to craft a story that reflects the essence of your child, your family, and your bond. Plus, kids just behave differently for me! The novelty of someone new snapping their photos means fewer forced smiles and more natural expressions.

But if you’re not quite ready to book a session, I’ve got your back! Here are my top tips for capturing beautiful photos of your little one, even without fancy equipment:

  1. Photograph from the head down If your baby is lying on their back, always shoot from the head down. Photographing from the feet upwards will give you a less flattering angle, especially up the nose. Shoot from above or at an angle from the side for the most flattering composition.

  2. Use soft, natural light Angle your baby towards a window for soft, natural light, but avoid direct sunlight. Direct light can create harsh shadows and make the baby squint. If you have sheer curtains, they work wonders for diffusing light, or simply position your baby in the shade.

  3. Capture those little details Zoom in to capture your baby’s tiny features – the wrinkles on their hands, the curl of their toes, and those squishy cheeks. These details are fleeting, so it’s worth focusing on them while you can.

  4. Keep your background simple Avoid cluttered backgrounds that can distract from your baby. A plain blanket, a cosy bed, or a soft rug can make all the difference, putting the focus where it should be – on your little one.

  5. Stay patient and be playful Babies can be unpredictable, so don’t rush. Give them time to settle, smile, or interact with their surroundings. The best moments are often the ones that come naturally when they’re relaxed and having fun. Keep toys, blankets, or a favourite stuffed animal nearby for distraction and comfort.

  6. Use props sparingly but thoughtfully Simple props can add to the charm of the photo. A soft toy, a personalised blanket, or a cute hat can enhance the image, but don’t go overboard. The focus should always remain on your baby, with the props serving as subtle touches.

Remember, the key is to have fun and capture moments as they happen. With a bit of practice and patience, you can take some wonderful photos on your own. But when you’re ready to sit back, relax, and truly enjoy the moment, I’ll be here to help! And yes, mums, that includes getting you in the frame too. After all, these photos will be treasured for years to come—let’s make sure you’re a part of them!

If you have any questions about family photography or want to book a session, I’m always happy to chat. Your family’s story is waiting to be told, and I’d love to help you tell it.
